Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society MIHS Outreach at Explorathon 2008
Carrie Z. Brown, CIH - MIHS Board
The Explorathon is an annual event for middle school and high school girls, sponsored by the Birmingham Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Cranbrook Institute of Science, the Detroit Country Day School, and the Ford Motor Company Fund. This experience offers students representing a diverse population from the metro Detroit area the opportunity to explore careers in the sciences, mathematics and technology.
Explorathon 2008: Expanding Horizons for Girls in Science and Mathematics was held on Wednesday, April 2. According to the AAUW website, 900 metro area young women attended and participated in interactive workshops held by 60 women professionals. MIHS and the field of industrial hygiene were represented in two sessions. Students in the sessions received an MIHS pencil.
The goal of the MIHS Community Outreach Committee is to promote industrial hygiene and the MIHS professional organization at local events such as this one. Please send any ideas for future participation to carrieziehl.brown@gm.com.
